Essendo gli ultimi quattro parametri sconosciuti, l’equazione di Frank Drake è un dogma scientifico che pone le basi per una teoria della ricerca della vita intelligente nel cosmo. La pratica scientifica si tramuta in atto di fede, e i messaggi inviati nello spazio rappresentano l’ultima espressione del bisogno umano di cercare risposte al di fuori di sé.

fp is the fraction of those stars that have planets
ne is the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets
fl is the fraction of planets that could support life that actually develop life at some point
fi is the fraction of planets with life that actually go on to develop intelligent life
fc is the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space
L is the length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals into space
As the last four parameters are not known, Drake equation is a scientific dogma that prepares the ground for a theory of the searching for extraterrestrial intelligence in the Universe. The scientific practice transmutes into act of faith, and the messages sent to the space represent the last expression of the human need to look for answers outside of himself.
